How do you craft an impactful, intentional arrangement?

Through studying the scores and recordings of cinematic, emotionally-evocative arrangements, we will analyze and discuss how arrangers use texture, nuanced vowels, onset and decay, and registral choices to maximize the impact and range of emotions in their work. Having listened to and discussed many examples, attendees will come away inspired by a sense of new possibilities in arranging and new ideas for techniques and textures to experiment with in their own arrangements.

This course, structured like an hour-long rehearsal, offers music directors and singers new ideas and tips for improving group sound. Using a system called PTO's (problem-tool-outcome), we will identify common roadblocks that many directors face, offer a tool to implement, and describe the results they can expect to achieve. We will go through new ideas for group warm-ups aimed at unifying the group sound. We'll learn a section of an arrangement to discover new strategies for teaching music quickly and efficiently. Our session will conclude with a jam circle and share the power of group reflection. There is something for everyone in this class and you'll leave with a slew of new ideas, tricks, and a renewed energy for group dynamics.

3 Reharmonization Tricks You’ll Use Forever
This class is geared toward novice and intermediate arrangers who are looking to increase their harmonic vocabulary. With a focus on the keyboard rather than jumping straight to vocal scoring, we will introduce and train the ear on 3 basic but incredibly useful reharmonization concepts:

- Secondary dominants
- Tritone substitution
- Chromatic substitutions

Some elements of chord voicings will be applied to these concepts. Don’t worry if you don’t know what these words mean yet!

This class is great for arrangers and singers who want to increase their understanding of harmony but aren’t quite ready to analyze advanced arrangements. The goal is for everyone to leave the class ready to use a few new chords and tricks!

This class aims to examine the potential of a cappella as a performance platform. While we have continued to push the boundaries of sound in a cappella, we tend to conform to the status quo when it comes to movement. Is it possible to push the physical interpretation of our music beyond formation changes and synchronized arm gestures? What can we learn from the way burlesque performers interpret and select music? Let’s find out!

Pedagogical Arranging: Deliberately Arranging to Improve Group Musicality and Stimulate New Arranging Paradigms
In this class, we will discuss how arrangers can develop their group’s musical skills directly through deliberate arranging while using these musical goals as an impetus for developing new arranging methodologies. Attendees will learn to isolate musical problems spots and tackle them constructively, to write portions of an arrangement engineered to be musically intuitive and pleasing while pedagogically sound, to use warm ups purposefully to structure a rehearsal conducive to continuous growth, and to take full advantage of “teachable moments” in rehearsal to create a positive, effective work environment. In addition, attendees will learn how to use musical goals and self imposed constraints to arrange fresh, inspired music by taking full advantage of specific, teachable vocal techniques. Attendees will see examples of these ideas in practice, as well as hear/sing warm ups/sections of arrangements that tackle specific problems common in A Cappella groups of all levels.

How To Sing A Cappella Forever
An anchor of the Boston a cappella scene since 1997, Similar Jones is one of the longest-running part-time vocal bands in the country, with the tenures of current members ranging from 5 to 21 years. We have evolved quite a bit over the years, from an aspiring boy band to a mixed group of adults with careers and children. We're still going strong and, some say, have never sounded better. In this session, we'll tell you about some of the lessons we've learned, including: alignment and flexibility on group goals, rehearsal scheduling and structure, flexible arrangements, leveraging non-rehearsal time, being active in the a cappella community, having a "band" mindset, and staying authentic. Come hear our story, ask us questions, and walk away with ideas about how to make your own a cappella experience last forever.

Working With Weaknesses
Often, it is established groups that are the hardest to change. Directors and those in leadership hoping to improve groups that have a well-defined climate, long-held traditions, and constitution in place are often handed an uphill battle when it comes to changing the status quo for the better.
This class will outline an organized checklist for improvement, giving strategies to systematically address weaknesses to put your group in the best possible position for success and improvement.
We’ll talk about how to evaluate group interest in improvement, identify shortcomings and pick the most crucial battles, tackle vague or lacking policy and document expectations, address musical pitfalls with strategic placement of members, make sure your arrangements are putting the group in a position to do as well as possible, and instruct the group in a way that will make performances more cohesive, clear, and more entertaining as a whole. Most importantly, this class will give recommendations for resources to reach out to during an often difficult process that no one should feel as though they need to tackle alone.

There is more to putting on a great show than just giving musical perfection to an audience! One major thing that sets apart amateurs from professionals is what happens in between all that a cappella singing. This class will explore techniques you can use to rehearse ‘talkies’, what to do, what NOT to do, as well as the importance of creating engaging show flow. You want to let your audience get to know you and your group without giving too much. We’ll also explore comedy on stage, and whether it is right for you and your group.

Singing With Your Whole Self
This class/workshop will be divided into three parts. The first part will be a hands-on exploration and tutorial on the mechanics of breathing, designed to encourage you to breathe more fully and easily. In the second part we will investigate the physical workings of the voice and run through some practical exercises that promote easier, more relaxed vocal production. Part three is a look at the voice as a social instrument, with an emphasis on working through the unconscious obstacles that arise under pressure that inhibit our free communication as singers.

Changing Ourselves & The World Through A Cappella
When we sing with others in harmony, there is something powerfully intangible, some may even say magical, taking place. When we use our voices to authentically express our whole being (heart+mind+spirit), it can be a transformative experience for ourselves and in most cases, for our audience as well. When we use our voices WITH others, each of us authentically expressing our being and creating a larger WHOLE, the impact is then greater and deeper. We are literally making harmony in the world. In this capstone class, vocalist/composer/educator/activist Lisa Forkish will explore the ways in which we can and do change ourselves, and ultimately the world around us, through singing a cappella. Assisted by the rest of her vocal group HIVE, Lisa will lead an interactive, inspiring and empowering session on a cappella's profound capacity to make the world a better place.
